Tpl: nooks transforms reading at the Toronto Public Library (TPL) into a multi-sensory experience that deepens engagement and fosters a love for books. These genre-themed nooks invite visitors to discover new worlds and connect with each other in a vibrant, welcoming library community.







Objectives

Enrich the Library Experience
  • Immerse readers in spaces that reflect TPL’s commitment to creativity, community, and digital engagement.
  • Provide dynamic ways for readers of all ages to bond with books.
  • Help children develop lasting memories and a love of reading

Boost Engagement & Brand Awareness
  • Position TPL as a hub for for shareable, in-person experiences that attract younger audiences and encourage longer visits.

Strengthen Community Connections
  • Foster belonging through shared experiences and bridge digital and physical library spaces.












Concept Overview

Types of nooks:
  1. Permanent: Representing popular genres.
  2. Children’s: Offering a variety of in-person activities.  
  3. Temporary: Highlighting new releases.

These spaces can also host special events such as author panels and book discussions.

Digital Integration:
As permanent, free-to-access spaces, each genre-themed nook is supported by a dedicated TPL webpage featuring:
  • Virtual book club discussions
  • Recommendation forums with links to TPL’s catalogue
  • Multiplayer games (e.g., Pictionary, riddles)
  • Details on in-person activities like AR scavenger hunts
  • Curated soundscape playlists






Prototype: Fantasy Nook
Below is a prototype of a fantasy nook, inspired by The Lord of the Rings. It is designed to be adaptable to various library spaces and if built, accessibility would be explored further.


Capacity: Up to 21 people, with wheelchair-accessible areas and movable beanbags.

Atmosphere & Interaction:
  • Ambient lighting mimics sunlight through trees.
  • A tactile “stream” with water running between plexiglass.
  • A nature soundscape enhances immersion.
  • Hidden LOTR elements encourage exploration.
