What is the Experiential Design program?

Canada’s first Honours Bachelor of Experiential Design at Sheridan College explores how design shapes the way people navigate, feel, and connect with spaces. The program combines elements of architecture, graphic design, interaction, and spatial storytelling, blending creative expression with strategic thinking. Its wide scope helped me build transferable skills, adapt to different challenges, and approach design holistically.

Key Areas of Focus

Spatial Communication and Navigation– Graphic design, including branding and typography
– Environmental graphic design
– Signage systems and wayfinding strategy

Storytelling Through Built Space
– Exhibition design
– Themed entertainment and environments
– Multisensory immersive experiences (including using sound and light)

Creative Community Experiences
– Placemaking strategies and interactive and/or practical installations
– Creative public programming for urban spaces
– Experiential marketing

Designing Hybrid Experiences
– UI/UX design for physical–digital interactions
– Animation
– AR and other interactive technology

Human-Centred Design
– Human-centred research and methods for studying spatial experience
– Participatory design, facilitation, and creative problem-solving
– Sustainable materials and accessible design practices

I studied all this through project-based learning—developing skills such as architectural diagramming, 3D modelling, and creating mockups, while researching how people interact with space.
